The Inside Story

The great outdoors has always been intriguing to me. From the expanse of open skies to the tiniest details of living organisms, I am continuously impressed by the variety and complexity of each encounter. I can remember as a kid when a large oak tree in our backyard had to be cut down. I was fascinated with the rings and how long that tree had been standing there because it was over 150 years old. So, for a school project in 6th grade, I mapped out the historical events that had taken place during the tree’s life. Ever since then, when I would look at a large tree, I would think about what was beneath the surface.

So, fast-forward to 2011, I was tasked with an annual report design project for a client at my design agency, Kessler Digital Design.

The client was Grace Point in Newtown, PA, and the overall concept was “Made for More”. The meaning of Made for More was that God has created us to do more and be more than we can imagine from our limited perspective. And the more that we trust Him, the more He can accomplish through us.

I had the idea of using circular themed images to show growth from a central point that expanded outward. I thought it would be cool to show a big, meaty image of a cross section of a tree, and then I thought it would be a piece of cake to find the right stock image for the job. Well…I searched high and low for the right image, but I could not find a single one that was worthy of a cover image.

From that time on, I thought in my head, if only I could go and search for the kind of cool tree sections that I know are out there, other people would also be able to see their beauty too.

As a creative person who loves the great outdoors, it came natural to me to search for those hidden gems. So, wherever I went, I would always keep my eye out for some ideal samples. And, the more that I discover and capture, the more I appreciate their uniqueness.
